At Land's Sake Farm, we use sustainable farming practices to ensure both soil and crop health. This includes:
- Conducting annual soil tests in our fields to monitor soil health and nutrient availability to our crops.
- Regularly applying compost to our fields.
- Using active cover cropping and “green manure” management to build nitrogen and organic matter in our fields. This helps to reduce topsoil erosion and nutrient leaching, and can also reduce the need to invest in off-farm inputs such as fertilizer.
- Rotating our vegetable crops and allowing about 1/5 of our total 24 tillable acres “rest” in green manures and cover crops for 1 to 3 seasons at a time.
- Applying tillage methods that result in the least compaction to our soil.
We are happy to explain our farming practices to anyone who is curious about them! Look for more info about our practices soon.
