Dear
Parents and Kids,
Thank
you for
your interest in Green
Power. We are excited to have middle school students learn about agriculture with us at the
farm. The art of raising food is a fabulous backdrop for
many lessons. It is especially important for young people to understand where their food comes
from and how it is grown. Working in their own garden and at the
farm provides a great setting to let the mind be
free and creative. Kids need fresh air, dirt under their fingernails and
that good exhausted feeling which comes from harvesting bushels of fresh
veggies.
What We Do:
During the summer, Land's Sake runs
the Green Power Program in contract to the Weston Conservation
Commission. With the help of Green Power participants, we raise over
30,000 pounds of fresh food for Boston area food banks. Now we are also
running a once-per-week after school Green Power program in the fall and spring, and the Maple Sugaring
prograim in February and March. At Green Power,
we introduce students to an awareness of ecology and the notion of
sustainability. We study the science of the living world, and introduce
sustainability as a framework for making decisions about our use of
natural resources.
The work the kids put in on the farm,
raising vegetables to be distributed to local area food banks is a direct expression
and vehicle for our mission. Beyond this, we have educational activities,
natural history lessons, health and wellness exercises, and
of course plenty of engaging nature games. We hope that the Green Power
experience will contribute to a life-long love of nature, learning, and
participation in one's community.
Please Consider Green Power for this
coming summer!

Youth Farming Program
Green Power Summer
Kids need fresh air, dirt
under their fingernails and that good exhausted feeling which comes from
harvesting bushels of fresh veggies. This is exactly what Green
Power provides for its participants as they learn the art of raising
over 30,000 pounds of fresh food for Boston area food banks.
Working in their own garden and at the farm, youth will be introduced to
the awareness of ecology and the notion of sustainability as a framework
for making decisions about our use of natural
resources.
Running in week long sessions during the summer,
middle school students will also learn critical job skills as they will
required to interview for and maintain their
paid position at the farm. We hope that the Green Power
experience provides a vehicle through which our mission is achieved and will
contribute to a life-long love of nature, learning, and participation in
one's community. The hours for Green Power are 8:00 am to
12:00 noon, Monday through Friday. Green Power will not meet on

Designed to actively involve youth in all phases of
maple sugar production, students help identify and tap maple trees,
gather sap, as well as boil and bottle
syrup. Along the way, students will learn about the
rich heritage involving sugaring in New England from past to present. The
season ends with the Sugaring Off event at the Sugar House where
students will lead discussions and tours utilizing the knowledge they acquired over
the season. The program meets on Mondays and Thursdays from
2:45 to 5:15 (see link at the top of this
page).

Green Power Program
In addition to growing and harvesting
produce during the summer months, youth now have the opportunity to
follow the cycles of the land throughout the seasons. During these
sessions, youth will visit the farm once a week to take a greater role
in the success of their produce as they follow the path of their seeds
from the earth to the plate.
