Spring is upon us and it's time to bust some sod! Well, actually, what we're seeing here is the discing in of our rye cover crop at the Green Power field up off of Merriam Street. This field will be planted by our middle school students during the spring after school program over the next two months. During the summer, the Green Power participants will tend to this acre of land, right where Green Power started in the 70's with Bill McElwain. The rye was planted last fall after the corn harvest, and has been soaking up sunshine through the late fall and early spring. Now the nutrients in the rye will cycle into the soil here to be available to the coming crops this summer. Here we have a chorus of peppers jumping out of the ranks in the greenhouse. The temperature guage on the right helps us keep track of these tropical types - they like it at 80F to germinate. We've got about 3600 pepper plants coming up for this season. Various onions are in the background, getting watered by Erik Baum.
Here are the Green Power kids working on building a composting bin system up at the fields. The activities are work-based, helping the kids take responsibility for their engagement in farming. If you or a kid you know would be interested in the Green Power program, please click here . Thank you for your interest in local agriculture!
